Students test skills at CWA public speaking

Judges Jude Fleming and Jan Kennedy took on the difficult but enjoyable task last week of deciding winners in the annual CWA Public Speaking competition, contested by students from Warren Central and St Marys Catholic Schools.

Ms Fleming noted the usual high standard as well as continued improvement of speeches from previous years.

As an artist Ms Fleming pointed out the commonalities between a good painting and a good speech.

She said both must have a subject, present well, include a short title and most importantly engage the audience.

“There is preparation; stretching the canvas, mixing the paint; researching the speech, writing it, re-writing it rehearsing then presenting it - all the while appearing relaxed and confident and looking at the audience,” Ms Fleming said.

“Congratulations to each and every contestant; on braving the CWA speech day, on taking the risk and standing up and speaking, a skill that will always be a great asset and of great value to you throughout your lives.

“As with painting, speechmaking is not so much what you talk about but how you do it.”
