ELMO Projectors: The New Wave in Education

No More Hot, Uncomfortable Overhead Projectors

As a teacher in secondary education at a rural school district, I was overjoyed when we upgraded six years ago from chalk boards to white boards. Granted, I only have one, but it's a start. I supplemented the white board with my trusty overhead projector machine with its light bulb heat blaring at me while I strained to listen to student responses over its whirring fan.

The overhead projector required transparencies, which were a pain to wash. As such, I often filed them away for future years and just purchased new, blank transparencies each year out of my limited classroom budget.

This year I am tickled because our school district's media specialist used a grant to purchase an ELMO (Electricity Light Machine Organization -- not to be confused with the Muppet's character) presenter for each of our math department's teachers. Attached to our new digital projector which has been mounted on the ceiling, this modernized my classroom beyond my imagination!

Instead of preparing transparencies with stinky markers that make the font too large to fit entire examples on the page, I am able to show printed material or handwritten items without a fuss. Sometimes I simply place my textbook under the camera to show a diagram. The presenter works like a digital camera, so if students have work to share I no longer need to wait for them to duplicate the work on a transparency sheet or at the board. Instead, I just slide their work under the ELMO machine so it can shine up on the screen for the whole class to see! My days of sore feet are gone, too, because I sit at my desk when sharing notes and then walk around with ease when needed.
