What is a Medical Coder? Overview of Medical Coding:
Medical coders work in the billing office, or “back office” of medical practices or hospitals. Medical coders help to complete, review, and process medical claims to help physician practices and hospitals get reimbursed from insurance companies for services and facilities provided to patients.

Each medical procedure and patient encounter has a number, or CPT code, associated with it which corresponds to another code for a diagnosis (an ICD code). This helps insurance companies account for, and track the money they reimburse to physicians and practices, to help prevent fraudulent medical claims or errors in payment.

Skills Required for Medical Coding:
Medical coders need to work well with numbers, and also should have a great attention to detail. While much of the job entails administrative tasks such as reviewing, processing, and submitting medical claims, some interpersonal skills are necessary. At times the medical coder may have to obtain additional information from a physician or other medical provider in the office. Also, the medical coder may have to contact insurance companies regarding questions about claims.

Medical coders should also be comfortable working with computers and various types of medical coding and billing software programs.

Educational Requirements and Professional Certifications for Medical Coders:
To become a medical biller or coder, you must have a high school diploma and pass an accredited program in medical coding. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) offers accredited certification courses to achieve a CPC certification (Certified Professional Coder), and other related certifications for medical coders. Courses are offered in a classroom setting, or online. Therefore, students often complete the coursework while employed elsewhere full-time. An accredited course should cost between $1,000 and $2,000.
The academy recommends completion of a medical terminology course and anatomy course prior to taking the medical coding course for certification.

The next thing is to choose the colour first.  If, you are going to be dressed in neutral tones, why not carry a bright handbag to add some punch and a zing of colour to your outfit.  If, your wardrobe choice involves bright, vivid hues, tone it down with a basic brown or black handbag.  Bags matching outfits is not really necessary, but ensuring all colours complement each other is necessary.  For one tone outfits, why not carry a patterned bag whose colours match the outfit.

As for size wise, select a purse that’ is proportional to your outfit.  A giant handbag looks stylish, but may look out of place when wearing a femininely pretty sundress.  However, it is not necessary to sacrifice functionality for stylish though tiny clutch purse.  Cute they may be but they don’t hold much.

When choosing handbags also keep length in mind.  A shoulder bag should hit at a flattering spot on your body, as handbags add bulk to the frame.  If, you are large of hip, your handbag should stop at the waist, in order to draw the eye upward.  Thick-waisted people should pick bags with longer straps.

Composed of synthetic and natural materials, various industrial purpose gloves are chemical, heat, cold and abrasion resistant. A common material used for the manufacture of these types of gloves is nitrile. This durable material is also known as nitrile butadiene rubber, or NBR, which is capable of withstanding exposure to oils, greases and acids, though experts advise against using this material with strong oxidizing agents. Nitrile gloves may be treated or lined with additional materials, such as neoprene, for additional insulation and safety sealing purposes.  

Another material used in the production of water-proof gloves is polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, which is commonly known as vinyl chloride plastic. This material is suitable for use when handling a range of detergents and aqueous solutions. Gloves that are PVC coated are commonly formulated to be germ resistant and may be used for pesticide applications and for handling oil-soaked components. Combinations of butyl and neoprene (synthetic rubbers) are also used for the fabrication of chemical safe gloves, and these materials are resistant to various oils and petroleum. Neoprene, specifically, is also suitable for protection against alcohols, alkalis and an array of hydraulic fluids and oil types. Butyl resists oxidation and is commonly used for processes with highly corrosive acids and solutions, such as nitric and sulfuric substances.

For light duty operations and some laboratory procedures, workers may opt to wear natural latex gloves. This type of glove is suitable for intricate operations as they are not as bulky as various heavy duty materials. Latex gloves are considered multi-purpose gloves and are often used in clean rooms and for processes where solutions such as acids, ketones and salts are involved. They may be treated with a coating of polyurethane for clean room use. Polyethylene is another material used to fabricate gloves for similar operations, and is usually available as thin, disposable gloves. Manufacturers also fabricate variations of these gloves that include liners for sensitive skin types. This material is commonly used for food handling operations.

If you are thinking of getting an anti aging treatment but facial surgery isn’t for you – you may be tempted by Thermage – marketed as a low risk alternative to face lift surgery.

Thermage – the makers claim – is a highly effective non surgical face lift – all the skin lifting effects of a face lift without the pain.

This apparently miraculous anti aging treatment first came to everyone’s attention – as with so many other things – following a glowing review on Oprah.

Thousands of eager viewers rushed to get the procedure.  But is Thermage all it’s claimed to be?

Thermage is a type of laser treatment which which heats and tightens the lower layers of collagen in the skin resulting in a younger and smoother appearance.

Thermage uses radio frequency to heat up the deeper layers of the skin and this technology has caused some users significant problems with dimpling. The heat from the Thermage machine penetrated too far into the tissue heating up the fat layer as well as the skin and resulting in a lumpy dimpled look – a bit like cellulite. Definitely not what they wanted to achieve.

The makers of Thermage insist that these problems no longer occur because the technology has moved on. Typically the whole Thermage treatment is given in one intensive session and some plastic surgeons consider that a gentler approach over a series of sesions is a better approach.

If this is a worry but you are still interested in Thermage – talk to a registered cosmetic surgeon or clinic about it. There are other options availabe and may be something else would work better for you.

It’s important to realize that one Thermage treatment can’t be a replacement for a face lift surgery – expect a degree of skin tightening and skin firming around the order of 30% but don’t expect miracles.

The Thermage face lift can be applied to the forehead, brow, eyes, mid and lower face and the neck to reduce wrinkles and lines. How much of the face is given the Thermage treatment is up to you and your cosmetic surgeon but it will depend on the amount of collagen breakdown.

Prescription eye glasses are not enough when working with power tools. Unfortunately, the temptation is to trust our glasses "just this once" far too often when making that last cut or finishing a project.

People often make the mistake of visualizing the area needing protection as the diameter of the visible eyeball and lids. This is incorrect. The area actually requiring coverage is the entire eye socket itself. Take your finger and stroke it up over your cheekbone,looking for the rim of the eye socket. Now, stroke around its rim as you would around the edge of a cereal bowl.

Pretty big, isn't it?

If a piece of debris impacts your face high on the cheekbone or to the side of the eye there is a good chance it will deflect along the bone right into your eye socket. The bridge of the nose as well as the ridge of bone under your eyebrow can also deflect wayward debris into the eye. We've seen ricochets shown in the movies, so the concept shouldn't be too hard to grasp.

Proper safety glasses provide coverage around the eye, not just from straight ahead.

Prescription eye glasses are not enough when working with power tools. Yet it is my experience people who wear prescription eye glasses will less often seek out proper safety glasses and eye protection when working in the shop. The tendency is to believe "Ah, this isn't so bad, my glasses are enough".

There are three styles of safety glasses to be found: Safety glasses with slightly over sized lenses and traditional looking ear-hooks, safety goggles that provide a full seal around the eyes with an elastic band for pulling around the back of the head, and clear face shields that flip down from a "hat" shielding your whole face to a bit below your chin.

Tattoo Removal Skin Peels Vs Tattoo Removal Creams Vs Tattoo Removal Using DermaBrasion

A friend and I, along with 3 other buddies, decided to try an experiment to remove tattoos that we have all had for many years. Over time we just decided we no longer liked what we saw on our arms, shoulders and chest so we decided to test all the varieties of tattoo removal except Laser because none of us could afford the price, plus we wanted to see for ourselves if the other products actually worked or were just marketing hype. We represent a mix of 2 Civil Engineers, a Commercial Real Estate salesman, a pharmaceutical sales rep and a self employed landscape architect.

After reviewing the options available we decided to use Tat B Gone and Tattoo-Off to represent the tattoo removal creams, Nuviderm to represent the cosmetic acid peeling agents and WreckingBalm as the dermabrasion candidate. We didn't even consider a salt dermabrasion product because I had used a brand that shall remain nameless and I could have gotten the same results using 80 grit sandpaper, man was it rough.

We had 5 guinea pigs and 4 products so it was decided to really test the tattoo removal creams since, if they worked, it would be the obvious way to go since you just rub it on like Jergins Hand lotion and after a few months you're done, or so we thought, but we'll get to that later.

Since this whole thing was my idea I decided to use WreckingBalm. I've heard the radio commercials and it sounded like the way to go. Robert, Khalid and Pat started with TatBGone and Tattoo-Off and George was the Nuviderm test subject. Mind you, two of these guys, Robert and Khalid were the Engineers - and they were driving us nuts with observing proper technique, following instructions to the "T" and keeping logs with application dates, results etc. They wanted quantifiable results at the end of the test to make sure THEY were satisfied that the winner was actually the best product.

The official kickoff for the test was at my house. We sat around the island in the kitchen, read the instructions and proceeded to do our first tattoo removal treatments. None of us had what I would call huge tats, just run of the mill stuff - names (2), a Celtic symbol that we kidded George was the symbol for Idiot, a flag and a weird conglomeration of an ex-wife's name covered up by what was supposed to be the Arkansas Razorback mascot, which we all took to be symbolic for a nasty divorce.

The tattoo cream guys had it easy, they just rubbed a little on their tattoos, popped open a beer and watched George and I go through the steps of our chosen removal methods. I had my battery operated sander, spray, cream - the whole nine yards. I knew I picked a winner and was happy with the entire procedure that first day, while George was next to me bitchin about diluting, mixing and testing, but was determined to get rid of that Celtic symbol.

When I finished my skin was red from sanding on it, maybe a bit to eager my first time out. George was showing off his "Frost" which meant his first Nuviderm application was a success and wasn't actually all that bad.

If this was a movie this is the part where they would flash on the screen ...ONE MONTH LATER...

The cream guys - Robert, Khalid and Pat had been rubbing away for 30 days - their tattoos looked the same, but they now had soft skin! I had been grinding away every third day, spraying and rubbing as instructed with nothing to show, but it was still early and we all knew going in this was a long term project - at least 6 months, maybe a year (but hopefully not). George had peeled a layer of skin and had done his second application the previous week so his skin was about to peel again, but no real change as far as we could tell.

...TWO MONTHS INTO THE TEST...

The Tat B Gone and Tattoo-off guys were still rubbing and one was starting to see a bit of difference, but nothing to brag about.

George was still peeling, his third application the day before with no noticeable change and I was still sanding and using the other stuff, but every third day seemed to harsh, my skin was a bit tender so occasionally I'd have to skip a day and sand on the fourth day. Still no change.

90 DAYS INTO THE TEST...

Tattoo creams weren't doing much, but Khalid's skin color was fading but not his tattoo, it was weird. Khalid has a dark brown complexion, but it was a lighter brown where he had been rubbing on the cream with no noticeable change to the tattoo. Robert and Pat couldn't see any difference to skin tone or tattoo.

George was about to do his fourth treatment, his skin was slightly pink at the treated area and the tattoo seemed to be getting brighter, more vivid. Not what we expected, but he was prepared to continue.

I was still sanding away and couldn't tell for sure if there was a difference or not, but I was undeterred.

So you outfit a client’s master bedroom closet with all of the latest amenities, add that extra flourish in architectural details and take stock of his/her wardrobe to include the right balance of shoe shelves and hanging space. But then your client asks you for a few tips on how to store garments properly. Perhaps you readily supply a list of suggestions. Or, perhaps you struggle to settle on an answer.

Either way, we asked the garment storage specialists at New York City-based Garde Robe to offer a few tips for storing garments, shoes and specialty items such as beaded blouses and fur. With an additional outlet in Tokyo, Japan and plans to expand into other key markets, Garde Robe provides professional storage services for its roster of clients who need extra closet space. Once a client calls, the company retrieves his/her belongings, has them professionally photographed and then creates a “cyber-closet” that the client can reference when preparing for a trip or an event. Garde Robe staff members personally deliver garments and accessories to the client’s doorstep or expertly pack a suitcase and ship it to the client’s destination.

But the company also stores the archives of fashion designers such as Oscar de la Renta. While Garde Robe’s vice-president, Doug Greenberg, maintains that one could earn a PhD in garment care, he suggested an abbreviated list of tips that custom storage professionals can share with their clients.

Proper Cleaning and Insects: Because many Garde Robe clients store their seasonal items at the company’s state-of-the-art storage loft, Greenberg says that the most important element of proper garment care is appropriate cleaning. Even if someone has only worn a dress suit once, the pieces must be dry-cleaned before storage. Otherwise, they risk an infestation of Clothes Moths, whose larvae feed on the bacteria that insidiously grows on garments that have not been cleaned. To help combat the potential problem, Greenberg advises clients to invest in lavender sachets or cedar blocks, especially for fine knits.

“Let’s say you have a cashmere sweater, and you’re going to put it away for the summer,” Greenberg says. “First things first, make sure it’s properly cleaned, fold it with acid-free tissue in the crease and then place a cedar block wrapped in the same acid-free tissue before you put it away in a breathable, canvas box.” Because cedar blocks and flower sachets have oils that can stain garments, Garde Robe staffers advise clients to wrap them in tissue paper before placing them in proximity to clothes.

They also recommend using acid-free tissue in the crease of folded garments, such as sweaters and cotton shirts because it prevents the fabric from breaking down ever time. “If knits aren’t folded with acid-free tissue, then it’s very much like bending a straw in half,” Greenberg maintains. “The fabric will eventually break over time.”

Build A Two-In-One Shed

Here's a handsome Colonial-style storage shed that's one of the most versatile, well-designed backyard buildings we've seen. In fact, it's really two sheds in one: a 10 x 12-ft. toolshed for general storage and an 8 x 10-ft. open-bay extension that's ideal for keeping firewood stacked and dry. The extension is also great for storing large items that might not easily fit into the main shed, such as lawnmowers, bicycles, patio furniture, wheelbarrows and stepladders.

We built our combination shed on a 4-in.-thick concrete slab, which makes an extremely durable and weatherproof floor. You could also construct a wood-frame floor using pressure-treated 2 x 6 lumber and a plywood deck, and support the assembly on solid concrete blocks or pressure-treated 6 x 6 skids. If you go with the slab, it's a good idea to hire an excavator and mason to have the job done right. Place anchor bolts in the concrete for securing the walls, taking care to avoid vertical frame locations and wall openings.

We sheathed the structure with 1 x 6 tongue-and-groove cedar siding, which is naturally resistant to rot and insects. The roofs are covered with slate-gray, architectural-style asphalt shingles. Perforated-aluminum soffit vents installed along the eaves and continuous ridge vents at the peaks help exhaust hot air that can build up under the roofs during warm summer weather.

The main shed has three tilt-in barn-sash windows and a door that's made from the same tongue-and-groove 1 x 6 cedar used for the siding. You're not likely to find barn-sash windows at a home center, but they can be special-ordered at most lumberyards and farm-supply outlets.

START AT THE TOP
Before building the walls, make use of the open floor space as a platform for building the roof trusses. Each truss consists of two 2 x 4 rafters and a 2 x 4 chord that also acts as a ceiling joist. At the corners are plywood gussets secured with construction adhesive and roofing nails.

Note that the gable trusses have collar ties (short horizontal members) so there's extra wood to which you can nail the siding. When you build the gable trusses, add flat 2 x 4 pieces, or shoes, to their bottom chords so the gables can be set slightly proud of the walls below them.

Both roofs have a 10-in. pitch--the slope rises 10 in. for each horizontal foot. This creates 50-degree angles at the rafter and chord ends. If you're thinking about replacing the kitchen sink for your mobile home, you'll probably need to buy a sink that's made for it, unless you're willing to do a full counter replacement.  That's because mobile home kitchen sinks and the counters that support them aren't quite as deep as those in site built homes.  That means there's not enough room to install a standard sink.

Mobile home kitchen sinks come in two basic sizes.  The first is seventeen inches deep, the second nineteen inches deep.  Those extra two inches are from a lip on the sink back, where the water supply and faucet hiles have been pre-drilled.  The nineteen inch size is the least expensive and most popular of the two.  However, many older homes have seventeen inch sinks, meaning the faucet holes are drilled through the counter, not the sink. 

This can cause problems, since failing sink washers can create leaks, allowing water to get into the material the counter is made of.  If you're planning to replace a mobile home kitchen sink, be sure to check the counter around the faucet.  If it's not sound, buy the nineteen inch style sink and cut away enough extra material to allow it to fit properly.  Be sure to get a three or four hole sink - the fourth hole will provide ventilation for a dishwasher or for installing a sprayer. 

If you can find only three hole mobile home kitchen sinks but require a fourth hole, you'll use a knockout punch to fix the problem.  Drill a pilot hole through the sink, slide the punch's bolt through it, then tighten the punch.  It'll cut a clean hole through the sink in the size required.  If you don't have a knockout punch, you can rent one. 

Remember to give yourself a lot of time to replace your mobile home's kitchen sink.  Plan on making several trips to the hardware store, because there are good odds that the new sink you buy won't ne exactly the same as the other one.  Whether the faucet is mounted higher, the drains are in a different position, or the sink isn't as deep, you'll probably need to make some adjustments.  If your faucet is getting old, now's the time to replace it.  Also, be aware that there's a good chance something whill break during replacement - be ready for it to happen.

Not Your Lunch Bucket Kitchen Sink

Jamie Drake is the founder of Drake Design Associates in New York City and a 2003 Interior Design hall of fame inductee. Some of his notable clients include New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg as well as Madonna.

Fu-Tung Cheng has been in the design field for over 30 years. Raised in a family of artists, Cheng founded Cheng Design, a Berkeley, California-based company specializing in residential renovation and innovative kitchen and bath design. He's known for his creative work with concrete countertop designs.

Drake's design for Elkay resulted in the "Vase" sink models, available in single or double-bowl arrangments.

The Vase sink represents Drake's desire to, in his words, "create surprises" and develop something fresh in the design of kitchen sinks. The outline of the sink emulates the shape of a vase, inspired by the timelessness of the vase as a beautiful yet practical instrument used throughout history and across cultures. The classic shape of the vase is preserved in the sink's form while maintaining the usefulness needed in a hard working kitchen fixture.

Fu-Tung Cheng's approach is centered around the concept of a functional art piece. Cheng's "Ripple" design is characterized by a long (over 70") bowl and drainboard combination. Each end of the sink is circular, representing circular ripples emanating outward from a stone dropped in water. Despite its length, the sink's basin is designed to fit inside a 36" base cabinet.

On The Practical Side

Both of these designers' sinks are made with 18 gauge stainless steel, finished with Elkay's Lustrous Satin finish and treated with their SoundGuard application. The latter is an insulation treatment that mutes sound and offers some insulation against the formation of condensation under the sink.

Accessory options include custom cutting boards that increase the sinks' functionality while preserving the form and design inspiration of the sinks. The Vase sink's cutting board fits into a portion of the sink, maintaining access to the wide portion of the basin and the drain.

The Ripple sink cutting board continues the circular ripple theme and bridges across the sink from front to back. The board can be slid from one end of the sink to the other allowing flexible positioning for maximum efficiency.

The cutting boards for both styles of sinks are easily removed and are simply "captured" in place by the edges of the sink.

The other options include custom wire grids, each sized to fit the unique shape of these sinks. The grid for Fu-Tung Cheng's design continues the ripple-in-the-pond theme with the lines of the grid imitating the intersection of concentric ripples of water.

All of these sinks are undermount sinks. Faucet installation will need to come through the countertop surface. The countertops for these sinks require custom cut-outs, due to their unique shapes, particularly the Elkay Vase sink. Custom-sized base cabinets will probably be required as well.

Years ago I remember toiling away underneath my parents’ house, brushing aside cobwebs in the dirty, dimly-lit and claustrophobia-inducing crawlspace to string audio cable for the stereo system. They wanted to be able to play their music from a central location and have it heard throughout the house.

Years later, this system was expanded with some wireless speakers to target new areas of the house but without the hassle of running the wires. While the wired speakers worked admirably, the wireless speakers were somewhat of a letdown. Static was fairly rampant, range was not that great, and the quality of the music coming from them suffered.

Because of my experience with that wireless system, I’ve been somewhat skeptical of other wireless speaker systems based upon FM signals and technology. As technology expands, however, new players arise. The new kid on the block this round is created by a company named Sonos. Their system works over a wireless network, the same one upon which your computers and other wireless devices operate.

The setup is fairly simple, but the price can be steep depending on how many rooms you wish to have covered. This system allows multiple room coverage from multiple devices, allowing all rooms to play the same music, or different rooms to play different tunes.

The whole system is based upon what Sonos calls “ZonePlayers.” Several different types of ZonePlayers are available at different price points. The S5 is a ZonePlayer that includes a set of speakers, others include the ZonePlayer 90 and the ZonePlayer 120 which basically function as amplifiers, allowing you to plug in speakers you may already own. You plug your audio sources into these ZonePlayers, making the sources available across the network.

One of the downsides of this system is that it requires a ZonePlayer to plug directly into your router and it requires broadband Internet access. There is a ZoneBridge available if you do not wish to have one of the ZonePlayers located in the same room as your router, but of course this is an additional expense and hassle.

To control the whole system, there are apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch, as well as both PC and Mac computers. There is also a dedicated Sonos Controller 200 that allows you a bit more flexibility and options. If you choose to purchase the Controller 200, you can sync your music system with such services as Last.fm, Pandora, Napster, Rhapsody, and even Sirus Satellite radio, straight out of the box.

This hugely popular diet promises diligent followers an initial weight loss of 8-13 pounds in the first two weeks. The emphasis is on avoiding highly processed carbohydrates, such as those found in baked goods, breads, snacks and soft drinks. Divided into three phases, the diet gradually reintroduces some initially forbidden foods. Overview of the South Beach Diet

Developed by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, the South Beach Diet is self-described as "neither low-fat nor low-carb," but rather a method that teaches followers to rely on the "right" carbs and the "right" fats.

Like the Atkins Diet, this plan is divided into phases: Phase One lasts 14 days, and is the strictest. Normal-sized portions of lean protein are allowed, as are vegetables, nuts, cheese and eggs. Phase Two lasts until dieters reach their weight-loss goal, and reintroduces some foods that were banned in Phase One, such as whole-grain breads and dairy foods. South Beach is very specific about steering followers toward foods they can eat on the diet and away from the foods they should avoid. During the past 20 years, I've read several thousand business plans and executive summaries for angel, venture capital or business buyout investments. Unfortunately, entrepreneurs make it too easy for investors who have the biggest check-writing capabilities to discard their business plans.

What did these well-meaning entrepreneurs do wrong?

On the first read of any business plan, investors are looking for fast reasons NOT to invest, rather than reasons TO invest. They evaluate risk then reward, in that order.

Yet, entrepreneurs tend to overstate the upside of a business opportunity in their written presentations. Their "perfect world" plans lack balance, making it too difficult for investors to believe anything in the document.

To improve your chances of appealing to investors, follow my top 10 business-plan presentation recommendations.

Say it fast. The first page of your executive summary should be the most interesting and well-written page of your business plan; otherwise, investors may not bother reading on. State your entrepreneurial purpose clearly and include how much money you want to raise. The point is to get to the point. Avoid hyperbole, exclamation points and statistics that run on for pages and pages.

Think like an investor. What matters to investors is more important than what matters to you. Emphasize in your executive summary and elsewhere  those factors that lead to successful investment outcomes: industry-leading gross profit margins; intellectual property rights; brand extension capabilities; customer contracts; recurring revenue potential; partnerships with larger companies; competitive advantages; likely acquirers, etc. If you dedicate more business-plan space to describing cool product features and social networking public relations plans than standard "investment fundamentals," then your plan probably won't get a second look. Experienced investors invest in businesses, not hip products that can become obsolete in fast-changing markets.

Free Jenny Craig Program Bests Diet Counseling Alone

For overweight and obese women, a commercial weight-loss program -- Jenny Craig -- resulted in a greater number of pounds shed through two years compared with usual care, a company-sponsored randomized controlled trial showed.

The average amount of weight lost was 16.3 pounds with an in-person center-based program and 13.7 pounds with a phone-based program, according to Cheryl Rock, PhD, RD, of the University of California San Diego, and colleagues.

That compares with 4.4 pounds with usual care (P<0.001 for the intervention effect), they reported online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The corresponding percentages of weight lost were 7.9%, 6.8%, and 2.1%.

Although clinical outcomes were not evaluated, Rena Wing, PhD, of Brown University in Providence, R.I., noted in an accompanying editorial that the amount of weight loss achieved in the study has been shown to improve cardiovascular risk factors.

But, she said, the findings likely represent a best-case scenario, and obese patients enrolling in a similar program outside of a clinical trial setting will probably not achieve comparable results.

Wing cited a cohort study of Jenny Craig participants that showed that just 7% of enrollees completed a full year of the program. In contrast, 92.1% of the participants in the current study were available for the two-year follow-up.

Because the program was delivered free-of-charge in the randomized trial, cost may explain the difference in adherence, she said, noting that such programs may be worthwhile healthcare investments if they can be provided at no cost to the participants.

"Given the epidemic of obesity and the availability of commercial weight-loss programs," Wing wrote, "cost-effectiveness studies should be conducted to evaluate the costs relative to the benefits in terms of improvements in patient health and quality of life, reductions in the need for medications, and prevention of obesity-related illnesses."

The Jenny Craig program involved in-person center-based or phone-based one-to-one weight loss counseling over the entire two-year period. Behavioral goals were a lower-calorie, healthy diet aided by the inclusion of free, prepackaged foods seven days a week during the initial weight-loss phase and increased physical activity. There were weekly one-to-one contacts with a counselor, who was instructed to deliver the program as it would be to a paying customer. There was no charge to the participants.

Usual care included two individualized counseling sessions -- one at baseline and one at six months -- with a dietetics professional, in addition to monthly contacts by email or phone.

All participants received $25 for each clinic visit.

Overall, 446 overweight or obese women (BMI from 25 to 40) ages 18 to 69 were assigned to the center-based program (169 patients), the phone-based program (164 patients), or usual care (113 patients).

At one year, women in the three groups lost 10.9%, 9.2%, and 2.6% of their body weight, respectively (P<0.001 for the intervention effect). The loss was attenuated at two years by 27% in the intervention groups and 17% in the usual care group (P=0.003).

The proportion of patients who maintained at least a 5% weight loss was significantly greater with the intervention by two years.

Participants in the intervention groups had a significantly lower C-reactive protein level (1.9 versus 2.4 mg/L) and leptin concentration (29.5 versus 32.7 ng/mL) at two years (P<0.05 for both).

North Haven students get a team-building experience

North Haven Community School's high school students clamber out of their tents in the cool morning air of Chewonki Campground. Their morning procedure is almost like that of a normal school day-eating breakfast and preparing for class-but today's preparations are for a most unorthodox classroom setting. Today they will be attending the campus at Shelter Institute, where they will learn the age-old art of post and beam construction. This is not for novelty, nor a lesson in an antiquated trade-the timbers that the students carefully measure, mark and cut will then be ferried out to North Haven and erected as part of the Projects Building, the newest addition to their school.

"It sort of naturally evolved," says Barney Hallowell, principal of North Haven Community School (NHCS), of the timberframing project. "The kids got very interested in the project, and actually began building their own models of timberframes. It was kind of surprising in a way. And that led to us saying ‘Well, let's have some instruction.'" The Shelter Institute in Wiscasset was a perfect match for the temper of the project-it has a long running history (35 years) in the teaching and dissemination of sustainable building techniques, and has developed a well-earned niche in the field of "green" architecture. The school has worked with high-school aged students before, but never an entire high school. Instructor Blueberry Beeton says, "We are really excited about it. We've offered a scholarship for years, [for one high-school aged student per class], but this is sort of a unique project." Beeton points out the fact that due to the small size of the school, the entire high school can attend one timberframing class session.

Glycogen is the source for the body to obtain glucose quickly when it is needed, mainly for brain activity. In his "maintenance phase" he advises that persons increase their carbohydrate intake to the point where they do not gain or lose weight.

Introduction

 

Giving helpful feedback on students’ work is an essential commitment in any teaching-learning situation. It is clearly related to teachers’ accessibility to students. Educators acknowledge the fact that of all the facets of good teaching that are important to them, “feedback on assessed work is perhaps the most commonly mentioned” (Ramsden, 1992; Biggs, 1999). ESL teachers in various contexts and teachers in higher education contexts face this daunting task very often and are often perplexed by the demands this task places on their entire teaching-learning environment. This issue becomes more complex when it entails assessing the spoken skills of non-native students of English as most students have added dimensions of fear, insecurity and anxiety when it involves speaking in front of their peers. This article highlights the strategies that teachers can use in evaluating a public speaking course.

Background

The public speaking course I teach in my university has a 100% coursework structure and is taught over 15 weeks. Students who take this course realise that they have to do consistent work as they have to prepare and present the following four types of speeches: A speech relating a personal experience, An Informative Speech, A Speech Describing a Process/Procedure and a Persuasive Speech. The course content covers both theoretical concepts of oral communication (basic elements of speechmaking, overcoming speech anxiety, developing ideas and materials etc.) as well as the mechanics of speech preparation and presentation (using nonverbal communication, using language and style to communicate, using your voice effectively, using visual aids etc.). Students attend a two-hour lecture and one hour of tutorial each week of the semester.

1. Create a vision. It's tempting to roll up your sleeves and plunge right into the details of your business: evaluating products, studying market segments, and sizing up your competition. Yet it's possible to get so caught up in the process of planning a business that you lose sight of what you're planning for.

Before you get lost in the details, take a step back. Outline a clear vision and a coherent set of values for your company. Develop a mission statement and use it to define short-term goals and priorities. Once you have a clear road map for your business, you can plan your journey with more confidence.

2. A budget isn't the same thing as a plan. You can't create a solid business plan without a budget and a financial forecast. But a budget should be the product of all the other elements in your plan. If you don't have a clear picture of your industry, customers, competitors, and market conditions before you develop a budget, your numbers aren't likely to reflect reality.

3. Don't ignore your customers. This may sound obvious, but too many entrepreneurs assume they know exactly what their customers need without bothering to ask. Take the time to learn about your customers, and build your business plan around their needs and desires.

4. Don't shortchange the competition. If you assume your firm will be the only game in town or if you fail to take existing competitors seriously, you're asking for trouble. Your competitors can be a great source of information about what works and what doesn't.

5. Be prepared to take risks. Creating a business plan isn't about avoiding risk; it's about understanding and managing risk. That's why a good business plan anticipates possible challenges and includes a variety of scenarios for meeting those challenges. There's a difference between a calculated risk and recklessness, and your plan can help you make that distinction.

6. Get a second (or third) opinion. The most experienced entrepreneur can still benefit from a different point of view. Even if you're the only person involved in your business, find someone who can study your plan objectively and point out possible weaknesses you might have missed.
